You know who else rocks? Rosario Dawson for starting Voto Latino and Josh for taking several months off from very busy independent label Nacional Records to work for Voto Latino. I thanked him for his commitment to getting people to vote. I expressed my frustration about the fact that so many people, especially young people don’t vote. Statistics show that voters over 70 vote in greater numbers. They are often more conservative. Not showing up at the polls allows them to have power over our lives and the future of the country. I didn’t expect his response. He explained it frustrated him too and that he was more motivated than others because he had already lost 3 high school classmates to the war. Three? I can’t imagine. That’s just mind blowing. It just another example (an urgent one) of why we all need to be more actively involved in this election and future elections.
Regardless of how each person votes it is just vital that we all participate. As further encouragement and just plain entertainment here are some funny videos to check out.
Sarah Silverman and the Great Schlep
And even more hysterical is Ralph Nader and the Obama Girl
If you aren’t familiar with Walter Kitundu can read a bit about him and the MacArthur Genius Award he just received on SFGate and listen to an MOTW interview & performance with him performing along with Robin Sukhadia as Field.
Back in July 2004, I received a request to interview Field. The description peaked my curiousity. Tablas and phonoharp? I didn’t know what that was but I wanted to hear it. Robin Sukhadia and Walter Kitundu came in for live studio performance and interview at KPFA on July 13, 2004. Click here to listen to Field’s performance and interview. Check out the pics below to see the instruments Walter brought in to the studio.
I sound really silly and giddy during the interview with Field because it was just so cool and exciting to be there. The instruments Walter builds are just so fascinating and exciting to look at it brings out the little kid in you. The whole time I just wanted to jump up and down in giddy excitement. (Then the kindergartener in me wanted to push him aside screaming ‘my toy, my toy, i wanna play!’ Ok, that didn’t go through my head but the phonoharp is that cool it would be fought over in a group of big kids.)
Fortunately, I am not alone. I went to a performance this year. The room was a bit empty but as he played and people saw what he was playing, they came and stayed. When he stopped the kids of all ages immediately zoomed in on him and his instruments asking questions and wanting to touch his phonokora and phonoharp. The instruments incite excitement and curiosity – two very good things. Walter has a sweet quiet demeanor which changes when he talks about his instruments. He gets all crazy maniacal and foams at the mouth. Just kidding. He doesn’t do anything of the sort but does share some interesting thoughts about his instruments and music. You can check him out for yourself on Sparks.
P.S. He takes great photographs of nature - mostly birds. He has some amazing close ups and action shots.
P.S.S. Walter Kitundu & Robin Sukhadia are performing at the Sangati Center on Nov. 22, 2008
I had the opportunity to interview Batista for Carnaval this past May. I checked out his performance. He put on a good show and was comfortable onstage. I didn’t find much information online but found enough information on him and it turned out to be an interesting interview covering some of my favorite topics. We sound a little disoriented (at least I was feeling it) because we were right behind the stage where Frankely’s set had just started. You can listen to the performance and interview here. The performance starts at around 61to 62 minutes into the special broadcast and the interview starts at around 78 minutes.
Surya Dub brings The Bug and Warrior Queen to SF along with Maga Bo. I will miss but it doesn’t mean you have to miss it…who knows maybe there are still $10 advance tix.

Ya es tiempo to start posting so it seems appropriate to start with Alla. Chicanos from Chicago, they want to change pop music specifically psychedelic pop music. I love them for trying. They are armed with their sonic manifesto. What is not to like? The music is lush, warm and with electronics - just how I like it. I haven’t checked out all the songs but I like Un Dia Otra Noche. Alla just performed at the LAMC in NYC and did live performance on KCRW. Here is their video for Un Dia Otra Noche. They play with string section. guaw. For more & better sound, check out their myspace: es tiempo.

Hey, Kids! What’s up?
Welcome to the new home of the playlists for Tuesday’s Music of the World with Host Victoria Z from 2004 to 2007. It has been about six months (ok a little more) since I left as host of MOTW and it seems like it is time to debut the new place in space.
The listening archives remain in the same place on the KPFA website. Please support the artists and buy the songs you like from your favorite digital music service.
I started as host of MOTW in September 2001. It was great fun; a fulfilling experience made fabulously rich with added privilege to interview amazing artists. Thanks to KPFA staff for the opportunity and support. Thank you to my friends, many of whom listened and introduced me to new music to share with other listeners. Most of all, I send out a big thanks to the listeners for their ear, kind words and especially the critiques.
I tried my best to create a music program that was accessible to as many people as possible, to make it easier to get through the day with a little lightness of being and maybe learn a little something about ourselves & those around us through the music.
I started just before September 11 which created a big shift and put a dark cloud over many people. It was clear people needed an emotional lift or something-something. The mood was real dark and sometimes I played music to it. I tried to speak to the confusion and sadness by playing lovely music and using it as a salve. It was the first time I thought about how I wanted listeners to feel when they listened to the music. Interestingly enough, I started to think more seriously about radio as an art.
Programming music for MOTW had multiple layers. Most important, I made it (and continue to make it) a priority to feature music by people or the children of people who have migrated to the U.S. or other western colonial nations like the UK or France. They exist quietly (ok not so quietly all the time) in the shadows of the mainstream, creating vibrate subcultures, under xenophobic & racist clouds, rendered almost invisible in the media yet contributing to American culture all the same.
It was really great fun to get the opportunity to play for listeners. It was great to get emails and learning that grandchildren listened with grandparents (in this case hip grandparent Anna Halprin), moms at home with the kids, or riding around town getting those errands done. That’s cool, Thanks!!

Best Aural Transporter
Wait…What’s that? No matter, I’ll take it.
Big thanks to the lovely editors at the SF Bay Guardian for a nice write up in 2007’s Best of the Bay issue as the Best Aural Transporter. I have been trying hard to put together seemingly disparate sounds in effort to open our ears, get our poor ears out of the stiff little boxes commercial programming imposes & produce a good show. my head hurts.
‘Victoria posts her playlists on her Web site - a lifesaver for those of us who have trouble remembering how to spell Aterciopelados or Cheikha Rimitti when faced with the iTunes search box.’
i knew that the list was good for something.
